Flying Lizard in Wisconsin for ALMS Round Seven at Road America

August 06, 2008 -- Elkhart Lake, WI -- The Flying Lizard squad arrived in Wisconsin today for the 2008 Generac 500 at Road America, to be held Saturday, August 9 at 4 pm Central Time. The Lizards are heading into the seventh race of the 11-race season and are in the lead in both the ALMS GT2 team and drivers' championships (Bergmeister and Henzler in the No. 45 Porsche).

The driver line up for this weekend will be Darren Law and Seth Neiman in the No. 44 Porsche, Joerg Bergmeister and Wolf Henzler in the No. 45 Porsche, and Johannes van Overbeek and Patrick Pilet in the No. 46 Porsche. The Road America 4.048 mile, 14-turn road course is a driver favorite. Bergmeister, who has won here in GT2 four times, said "Road America is such a great track. It reminds me of the Nürburgring Nordschleife with its elevation changes and turns. It's very fast and very technical. In terms of setup, I expect that we'll run a pretty stiff car here; it's a fairly smooth track with lots of fast corners. The setup is definitely more for high speed than at Mid-Ohio, which is a slower-speed track. We had a very strong car here last year and were on a winning race pace. With the changes that Porsche has made to the car over the last year, I hope we'll have another fast car this year."

This race is four hours, rather than the standard 2 hour and 45 minutes of most ALMS races. Flying Lizard chief strategist Thomas Blam added, "In terms of strategy, we need to consider that it's a four-hour race and the 4 plus mile track makes for a long lap. We expect that we'll be able to run about one hour before needing to stop for fuel, which would make it a three-stop race, barring any issues. But we have to make sure that our fuel mileage calculations are exact: it's a long lap and a mistake in this area could cost us the race. The long laps can also be an advantage though, because we have more time to make decisions and more flexibility."

Blam continued, "In the past, we've seen races here with a lot of cautions so we need to be prepared for that. Although it's a big track and there's lots of passing room, it's also a high speed track and cars definitely push it here. Hopefully we won't have the weather problems that we did in 2007 (heavy rain and thunderstorms) but in the late summer weather is very changeable. We're cautiously optimistic that we'll have strong cars for the race. We were competitive with the Ferraris here last year and expect that to be the case this year. I think the track definitely suits the strengths of the Porsches."
